Chemical skin peeling has many advantages compared with other skin resurfacing techniques. Chemical peels are generally less expensive that other treatments, and can be used to treat areas of the face, neck, chest, and hands with minimal healing time.
There are many types and levels of chemical peels that vary from extremely superficial to deep. Chemical face peeling can improve fine lines and small acne scars, but is not as effective as laser skin resurfacing. The main benefit of chemical face peeling is a rapid turnover of the skin cells which causes the formation of new collagen. This causes a generalized tightening of the skin and eliminates much of the superficial pigmentation such as sun spots, age spots, and diffuse blotchiness.
Dr. Lee primarily uses Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) for chemical peeling. This agent is safe and effective, and can be prepared in different strengths depending on the depth of peeling required. TCA chemical peeling can improve fine wrinkling and pigmentation problems. This type of peel can be performed with IV sedation on an outpatient basis. The TCA solution is applied to the face and reacts with the skin. The procedure takes about 30 minutes, and the patient feels like they have a sun burn for the next 2 days. In 2 to 3 days, the skin begins to peel and the "new" skin becomes visible.
Aesthetic Grade Peels by Skinceuticals are also an option. Dr. Lee can discuss which peel would be right for you during your initial consultation. Aesthetic Grade Peels are performed by our licensed aesthetician on an outpatient basis and usually take about 30 minutes. There is no downtime and only slight redness/flushing of the skin after this type of peel.
Whether a TCA or Aesthetic Grade Peel is performed, the new skin will be sensitive and must be protected. Sun protection is imperative to preserve the effects of the peel and to prevent the skin from premature aging. Depending on the peel strength used, patient healing times can vary. Usually, it can take up to 1 week when recovering from a chemical peel.
